For those who have been around this blog for a while it will not surprise you to learn that when it comes to animal rights, nothing much escapes my eye when on Euro vote duty. Everything that our MEPs have to vote on in Strasbourg or Brussels is always checked and then double checked.
Early in June, during a plenary session in Strasbourg, a vote concerning an EU trade agreement with Canada came upon the menu. Naturally enough, not recognising the EU as being in any position to tell either Britain or Canada how to conduct their affairs, your BNP representatives voted accordingly.
However, there are certain amendments in these reports that contain, on balance, a great deal of merit. Just such an amendment appeared in the aforementioned Vital Moreira report on EU-Canada trade relations:
"Takes note of the recent legal developments regarding the EU's ban on seal products, in particular Canada's request to the WTO for the establishment of a formal dispute resolution panel; and expresses its strong hope that Canada will withdraw the WTO challenge, which is counter to positive trade relations, prior to the need for ratification of the CETA agreement by the European Parliament."
To put it bluntly this equated to asking Canada to halt the vile and disgusting trade that involves clubbing seals and their pups to death in order to harvest their pelts. I am pleased to say that both of our MEPS needed no persuasion at all from me to support this move. The same however cannot be said for UKIP who are actually on record as voting against this amendment.
Normally I embed YouTube videos on this blog but because of the graphic and extremely upsetting content contained in this video of the 2011 Canadian seal hunt I am just going to link to it; I do so warning you all that you should think very carefully before viewing it.
Civilised people do not engage in such behaviour, in fact a civilised society would have such people rounded up and then beaten to such an extent that they are incapable of picking up a club ever again.
